‘You going to get that?’ Deniz Grady from the Daily News asked after Jess’s phone rang for the millionth time. Mattie’s name flashed up on the screen.

‘No, it’s fine.’ Jess angled the mobile away from her, as if Mattie could see through the phone. ‘What was the question again?’ She tried to focus back on Deniz, feeling a bit nauseous.

She never should have let the reporter through the door in the first place, but Deniz had said she just wanted to ask a few questions about Mattie, then barged right in. After all that awful stuff about Mattie’s father in the paper today, Jess had thought maybe she could set the reporter straight. But Deniz only seemed interested in asking questions about her relationship with Kyle.

When she got Mattie’s message she’d be dating Kyle tomorrow, Jess could barely believe it. She’d been so sure Kyle wouldn’t want to hurt Mattie any more than he already had. Maybe he did want to get back together. And if so, this article could help smooth things over before tomorrow’s date.

Deniz crossed her long legs and brushed the lapels of her tightly fitting blazer. With her sleek dark hair and perfectly made-up face, she was a dead ringer for Courtney Cox. Jess felt like a country bumpkin beside her.

‘I said, how did they meet?’ Deniz repeated loudly and slowly, as if Jess was a country bumpkin with hearing problems.

‘I think it was some kind of networking event for recruitment people,’ Jess said.

Deniz huffed. ‘Can you make it a bit more exciting? What was the name? When was it? Come on, give me the nitty-gritty.’

‘I’m not sure I remember,’ Jess said, worried now she might not be able to give Deniz what she wanted and slightly terrified of the impatient woman in front of her.

‘Look, it doesn’t matter if it’s not one-hundred per cent accurate.’ Deniz tapped her pen against her voice recorder and flipped open a notebook. ‘Just do the best you can.’

‘All right,’ Jess said slowly. ‘Well, it was the UK Recruitment Society, or something like that. A power breakfast at The Wolseley.’ Jess surprised herself; she didn’t even know if that’s where it had been held. But it sounded good. ‘Kyle approached Mattie to congratulate her on winning a contract his company had bid for. And he asked her if she had any positions opening up in her agency.’ That much, at least, was true. Jess remembered Mattie being impressed that Kyle wanted to work for her. When it came to business, most men ran in the opposite direction when they saw her coming.

Deniz looked up from her notes. ‘And then?’

‘She needed someone since the business was expanding quickly, so she took him on. At first she was really paranoid he was a spy for his old agency. But Kyle worked hard – harder than Mattie, which is almost impossible – and the business grew and grew.’

‘And their relationship?’

‘Mattie hadn’t had a long-term relationship since, well, forever. She couldn’t find a man who would live up to her expectations.
